Web Site Profile – World Speed Record

A few newsletters ago, I reported on the windsurfers who were going after the world speed sailing record. Finian Maynard surpassed the trimaran Yellow Pages 11 year old record of 46.52 knots by reaching 46.82 knots. This was done on the 1km man-made canal in Stes. Maries de la Mer in the South of France. The Yellow Pages team then suffered a big crash in their subsequent attempt in Australia that destroyed their boat. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. Next goal is to surpass 50 knots! Check out the experience including video, photos, and reports at http://www.mastersofspeed.com/

San Francisco - Part Deaux by Mac Barnhardt

Some of you may recall my write-up last year about my trip to San Francisco for business that included a little bit of windsurfing. At that time, I sailed at the Rio Vista area, located approximately 1 hour northeast of the city in the Sacramento Delta River region. Business once again took me to San Francisco this past August and again, I got in a little sailing. However, this time I went to a different location.

This time around, I sailed in the South Bay area at an area called Coyote Point. It’s located just south of the San Francisco Int’l airport in San Mateo. The water there is warmer and shallower (15-20ft deep) than in the North Bay area (around Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field, and Berkley area). Plus, it was one of the two on-the-water rental shops I found. The other is in Alameda, which is further away from the city across the Bay Bridge. They had good performance rental gear (Fanatic, North, Sailworks) and a nice grassy area for rigging.

I sailed in 15-20 mph wind and got a good taste of the Bay area sailing. It included big chop especially as I got farther out in the Bay. Afterwards, we (some co-workers and I) drove down Highway 1. We drove through Half Moon Bay, home of the world famous Mavericks big wave spot. Then we drove further south and stopped at world famous Waddell Creek and Davenport beaches to watch some windsurfing and kiteboarding action out in the waves. Our final stop was in Santa Cruz for sunset dinner by the water.

Obviously, there is a ton of things to do in San Francisco besides windsurfing. I did some mountain biking with coworkers. We rode across the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County. We found some single track trails and rode over to Rodeo Beach and back.

One of the coolest things about this area is the huge windsurfing and kiteboarding community. Everywhere I went (Crissy Field, Coyote Point, Waddell, and Davenport), there were a ton of windsurfers and kiters. As we were riding our bikes to the bridge, we passed by Crissy Field. This past summer, Crissy Field was the site of the very windy 2004 National Windsurfing Championships. There were so many people out there with their gear waiting for the wind to come up. When we rode back by there after our ride in Marin County, the wind was up, the sailors and kiters were out in the water, and there was a bunch of spectators taking it all in. It was a very cool scene to be around.
