The following is from club member, David Brown:

DUES, DUES, AND MORE DUES NEWS!

The Triad Windsurfing Club yearly dues beginning this year will be $125.00

and are to be received by club treasurer Keny Kirschstein by June 1, 2005.

Keny's address is:

Keny Kirschstein

3102 Ardoch Court

Greensboro, NC 27410

As Don Wrenn mentioned last year, our site costs have gone up while the club membership has gone down, hence the increase in fees this year. If we can maintain the membership then we are hoping for the fee to stay in this range. The club officers will take a look at the what’s left in the treasury kitty at the end of 2005 and make a decision on next year's dues in January, 2006. Anyway, you look at it, it’s still a deal to be able to have access to the lake. We would appreciate it if you get your dues in on time. Please note: we'll also be changing the gate combination in June, so get those checks sent or feel the wrath of those pesky phone calls from the club officers who would rather be doing something else!

SITE CLEAN-UP DAY

PLEASE set aside an hour or two on SUNDAY afternoon, JUNE 5th at 3 - 5pm to join in and help clean up the site. Sure it’s a bit of a hassle but its even worse if its only the same few people who handle it year after year. It won't take very long if we have a bunch of helping hands. So bring the kids, the wife and girlfriend and lets make a quick job of it. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU IN ADVANCE.

MAC MOVING ON

Please (sure are a lot of pleases in the newsletter, aren't there?) join us in thanking the magic maestro Mac Barnhardt for his constant enthusiasm and dedication in turning out the club newsletters for the past few years.  Mac will soon be departing to Mooresville close to Lake Norman where he has built a new house. Mac, what a great job you've done and we'll miss seeing you at the site as you're good humor and zest for windsurfing is infectious!  Here's hoping we'll be jibing with you on the coast and who knows, you just might find several of us in the new driveway when the wind blows at Lake Norman.

ANY ASPIRING ARTISTS/DESIGNERS OUT THERE?

Although them are hard booties that Mac has left us to fill, if you would like to pad your resume and volunteer to tackle the newsletter production, please send an email to Dave Brown at davekrys@triad.rr.com or call 760-8788. Don't be shy!

ELECTION DAY coming soon!

Is this a Viagra misprint? No, but the 2005-06 Triad Windsurfing Club officers will be officially elected on Sunday, June 5th. Not to worry---yours truly, David Brown, has agreed to step up and be the club president for the upcoming year.

Web Site Profile

Tampa & Sarasota Area Windsurfing

By Mac Barnhardt

My quest to try new places to windsurf when out of town goes on. In mid-April, I traveled to the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area on business. It was a regional sales meeting and rare play time was added to the agenda. While others played golf and went to the spa, I took off on a mission to windsurf. Mission accomplished. I did some research before I departed and found North Beach Windsurfing ( http://www.nbwindsurfing.com ). Britt Viehman owns this rental and lessons outfit. He sets up shop at a great location by the bay between St. Pete Beach and Tierra Verde/Fort Desoto Park. He can access any wind direction by switching his trailer to either side of the bridge and bay. Britt had new boards, sails, and other gear to rent. He had big sails and boards for the light winds and smaller gear for the big winds…..and not to mention his huge Great Dane, Chatter, was a nice companion to hang out with while hanging out at the beach.

Luckily, April is a good month for wind in Florida and I seemed to hit it just right. Although it wasn’t big wind, I did get 15mph+ two afternoons in a row. I sailed on two different 130 liter boards from Tiga, an interesting flat rocker board built only for speed, and from Starboard, the Carve 131, which I had been wanting to try out for a while now. The Tiga was a smaller scale Formula type board and took off like a rocket. The Carve was great especially when the wind picked up, the chop got a little bigger, and the sail had me overpowered. Its 130 liters felt much smaller and it had great control. On both afternoons, I saw dolphin jumping out of the water and spinning in the air….very cool. The water was in the mid to high seventies and I didn’t need a wetsuit. By the way, I took my own harness, which I highly recommend if you think you’re going to windsurf when you travel somewhere.

Britt was great. He rigged the sails for me and changed sails and boards for me when I requested it. It was like having your own sail caddy. He was also giving lessons to others while I was sailing. He is a US Sailing certified windsurfing instructor and also races in many of the area Florida Formula race series. Check out his web site (above) for more information and how to contact him if you’re in the area. He’ll definitely treat you right.

I stayed in Sarasota and noticed many sailors on the water down that way in Sarasota Bay. There is a shop there called Island Style Watersports (http://www.islandstylewindsurfing.com/# ) but I didn’t get a chance to experience what they had to offer. There were also many kiters out in the ocean. Like the San Francisco Bay area I visited the last couple of years, the Tampa area seems to have a big windsurfing/kitesurfing contingent as well. There are many bay and ocean sites in which to choose from in the area that can accompany most wind directions and conditions. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend going out for a sail. It’s a beautiful area to windsurf.

Windfest 2005 Highlights

By Mac Barnhardt

Windfest was great again, highlighted by good wind, weather, and windsurfing, new boards and sails to drool over, poker, BBQ, beer, great sunsets, great seafood, and generally hanging out with a bunch of wind-crazed nuts (just like us) from all over the country. Some of us even stimulated the windsurfing economy by purchasing new sails, boards, wetsuits, etc. It was held once again at Frisco Woods Campground in Frisco, Hatteras Island. The companies that participated included Starboard, RealWind, Sailworks, Ezzy, Hi-Fly, Aerotech, Exocet, AHD, Bic, Tiga, Gaastra, and Naish. Mac Barnhardt, Jeff Clark, Rob Cornwell, Todd Morris, and Mark Pace made the trip and stayed in a couple of the campground’s cabins. Jim Crawford was also there with his lovely wife, Angela, in their Airstream trailer. Jeff Clark came in 2nd place (again) at the always popular board toss. GoPro Video Productions was there once again to document the event on video and still pictures. Check them out at http://www.goprovideo.com

Windsurfing recap:

-         April 27th Wednesday afternoon – SW winds started around 10-15kts with big sails as the call, then increased up to 20kts and 6.5s for a good 3 hours of sailing to kick off the long weekend.

-         April 28th Thursday morning – NW winds (that always kick in early and die off by mid-morning) stayed true to form and gave us enough wind for about 1 hour of 20mph and 6.5s early in the morning.

-         April 29th Friday afternoon – A little bit of SW kicked in late in the morning for some good 15mph sailing with 7s and 8s, then it died on us.

-         April 30th Saturday – best day of the trip – 20-25 knots all day on 6s, 5s, and 4s. One of the best days I’ve had in a long time….not too hot, not too cold, not too windy, and not too light…..it was just right. I can still feel myself out there just flying….AAaaaahhh.
