More on speed and “riding the fin” from most recent US Windsurfing Newsletter –

Planing is achieved when the forces created by the water flowing under the board are sufficient to lift the board. The faster you are going, the less surface area must remain in contact with the water in order to keep the board suspended. The less wetted surface, the faster you can go. At the same time, as you tilt the board, the contribution of the fin lift becomes greater, and control of the fin is a larger part of controlling the board. You reach a point at which the windsurfer becomes part hydrofoil – you can “ride the fin”.”

We’ll Miss You Guys…

As Don mentioned, two of our very involved club members have moved from the area and will be greatly missed.

Jeff Shanklin relocated with his job with Tyco Electronics to San Carlos, Mexico. San Carlos is located on the Pacific coast side of Mexico and right on the water. There is a windsurfing beach there so hopefully Jeff will get a lot of sailing in. Jeff will sorely be missed as he was one of the club ring leaders, particularly with the PR side of Learn to Sail Day and getting many folks out to windsurf. You could always count on Jeff to be out on the water teaching someone to sail even during club trips and other outings. Jeff also served in the past as club president and vice-president. Jeff will now be our foreign correspondent and we hope to hear from Jeff and how the sailing is in Mexico.

Jason Wohlgemuth also relocated with a job, signing on with Microsoft and moving out to Seattle to work at their corporate office. Jason has been our club webmaster and been very instrumental in creating and building the club’s web site. Many thanks go to Jason for his very important role with the club. He will continue to assist with the web site until someone else can take over the role. Jason will be our west coast correspondent and we hope to hear from Jason on what it’s like to sail in Puget Sound. Perhaps a report from Hood River is in order as well?

Correction -

After the last edition of the newsletter (Oct ’03), one of the club members corrected me about a mistake I made in a review of the FOX8 coverage of our Learn to Sail Day. I wrote, “In case you missed it, Jim McSorley from FOX8, came out to our last Learn to Sail Day and got us some great coverage on TV. Don Wrenn and Jim Drake provided on-camera interviews and Jason Wohlgemuth and Tony Lombardo were shown sailing. Mark Pace was shown standing around….way to go, Mark!”

Mark Pace took great exception to my remarks about him standing around. So I reviewed the tape once more. In fairness to Mark, there were other people standing around with him. He was also shown pumping a sail on land, but strangely enough no one was around him…hmmm. AND I think I saw him picking his nose, but it could have been a scratch and not a pick. But let’s not split hairs. I want to make it up to Mark by proving to everyone the reports that he’s slow and only sails on a 7.0 are false. The cover photo proves that Mark does possess a smaller sail and can sail pretty fast with that sail. See Mark, isn’t that better?

Jim Drake -

Last October, there was a great article about club member Jim Drake in the Winston-Salem Journal. It was well written and covered his past accomplishments as well as his current work in Winston-Salem and in the windsurfing industry. This article can be retrieved from the Winston-Salem Journal’s archives at the following link (or just do a search on “Jim Drake” in the archives web site at http://www.journalnow.com ):

Jim also wrote a great article in the most recent issue of Windsurfing Magazine about differing board tail designs and how they work. Check it out.

Web Site Profile – World Speed Record Breakers

As shown on the front page photo, speed is definitely back. A few of the world’s best sailors have embarked on breaking the world speed sailing record. The current world record is average speed of 46.52 knots on a 500-metre speed course, held by Yellow Pages Endeavour, a large trimaran built to break the record. Finian Maynard recently broke the windsurfing world speed record and came just short of breaking the Endeavour’s record with 46.24 knots. The former windsurfing speed record was 45.35 knots and held by Thierry Bielak, who is going after the record again. Maynard did this in a purpose built speed canal in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. Beginning in February, he was going back there to try and break the overall record. The Yellow Pages Endeavour team is also back at it with a new craft, Macquarie Innovation, and trying to break their own record in Australia. World famous windsurfers Robby Naish, Bjorn Dunderbeck, Antoine Albeau, and Anders Bringdal kick-started this renewed quest to break the record back in July in the Canary Islands. They are now going for it in France in March and New Zealand in June. These sailors are confident that in the right conditions, they can break the 50 knot barrier. The race is on and should be very interesting. Go to these web sites below to see what these folks are up to. Check out the videos on these sites….it’s amazing to watch them go so fast:

Road Trip – by Mac Barnhardt (Photos by Mark Pace and Mac Barnhardt)

Mark Pace and I made a day trip on Saturday, November 8th to Emerald Isle based on a forecast of NE 20-25 knot winds and temps in the low 60s….and that’s exactly what we got. We left Greensboro early that morning with coffee in one hand and weather radio in the other. With the Sound Sailors house owners’ permission, we set up shop in their back yard and launched into Bogue Sound.

As I predicted, it did turn out to be our last day of windsurfing in 2003. We couldn’t have asked for a better day to wrap up the year. Since Pete and Suzanne Evans, the owners of the Sound Sailors house, are moving from Raleigh into their coastal home, the club trips will be going elsewhere. We will miss Sound Sailors. We couldn’t have asked for a better and more conducive place to sail from a backyard and hang out with friends. Big thanks to Pete and Suzanne for opening up their awesome house to us over the past several years.

I wanted to share something that was recently written and published by John Bryja in Windsport Magazine. I think it pretty much sums up our wind addiction:

“As windsurfers it’s something we’ve all felt.

We drive great distances for her.

We fly halfway around the globe searching.

Sit for days, staring, waiting for the arrival.

Ours is a marriage with nature that others will never understand.

We live for our next dance with the wind.”

Belews Lake is in full Spring swing with good winds already. A few members have already been out sailing this year at the site. Don Wrenn and I had it to ourselves on Friday afternoon, March 5th with warm southwest winds blowing 15-20kts, and 80 degrees. So what are you waiting for…get out there!

We hope to see all of you on the water this year…happy sailing to everyone!
