       Charlie Prewett – Club President

Back in 97’ (boy that sounds ancient), when I first joined the club, the always congenial Hermann sat me down at his dinner table for a beverage and to write a brief bio introducing myself to the club. In the years since I’ve thought about his hospitality and sense of camaraderie, and am still amazed how it mirrors my contacts with ALL the club’s members I’ve met since then. But the bio also made me ponder why I windsurf in the first place, which for me, is that it is the perfect blend of thrills, physical challenge and hob knobbing (is that a word?) with other wind-loving folk.

So as club president for 2004 I look forward to contributing about this theme of “why do I windsurf” gleaned over the twelve or so years I’ve been windsurfing and maybe inspire each member to similarly contribute an example of what possibly has thrilled, whipped and inspired YOU. As for me, three come to mind,

Ah yes…

Fighting the urge to panic when near the first time out I get stuck in lily pads in an alligator and snake filled Florida lake and immediately realized YOU CANNOT FALL!!! (I miraculously sailed slowly over each lily pad, one-by-one, to freedom)

Or the thrill of hanging on for dear life in a surprise thunderstorm, hitting what feels like the usual school-crossing speed, 25 or so – not fast till you really feel the wind pulling and tugging at your straps like some frothing monster - going WAY faster than ever… and the lightning, ah the lightning (nice touch mother nature) and knowing full well a spectacular crash is about to happen…

And finally to be out away from the city, under the stars where life has its own rhythm. Remembering how my wife Kelly wowed the crowd with her bacon-based clam chowder on a windy Emerald Isle evening. And how much we enjoyed meeting, laughing and hanging out with this lively crowd who watched the wind gauge like a stock ticker while fine-tuning Daiquiris and even tolerating my guitar playing…

Anyway, thanks to you ALL and hope to see you on the water soon!

Take Air,

Charlie Prewett

Web Site Profile – Your Local Windsurfing Shops

It’s high time to reacquaint everyone with their local windsurfing shops. “Local” for us isn’t so local since the closest shops are in the Outer Banks…5-6 hours drive away. However, the shops in the Outer Banks add a ton of value in many ways. If you go to the Outer Banks and visit the shops, you’ll see that you can:

-         Try boards and sails before you buy them

-         Demo and rent equipment

-         You can get personal tutorials on how to properly rig your new sails

-         Take lessons (this will help your sailing more than you know)

-         They will ship it to you

-         The staffs at these shops have a great deal of experience, set you up with the proper equipment, and take away the difficulty of getting the right parts to fit together (mast base and foot, extension, boom, harness and harness lines, etc). They can tell you what’s real, what’s practical, and what’s not necessary.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can’t get all this from a catalog. Support these shops because if they didn’t exist, we wouldn’t gain access to these benefits, experience, customer service, and knowledge. If a catalog has a better price, tell the shop…you never know what they might be able to do for you. But remember the extra value you get from these shops before you pay $20 less from a catalog. It’s worth it. See these web sites for more information on what they have to offer (in alphabetical order):

Ground Hog Day by Mac Barnhardt

What can I say? The Outer Banks trip in May (May 8th – 15th) was awesome. We had wind every day (Rob Cornwell and I sailed 7 days in a row), it was sunny every day, and temps were in the 70s every day. Rob and myself were there all week. Mark Pace was there most of the week. Jeff Clark stayed the first half of the week. Todd Morris and John Bryant showed up late in the week. David Brown was staying just down the beach with some friends from Baltimore. We missed Don and Debbie Wrenn as they arrived as we were leaving on the last Saturday.

After our first day of strong Northeast wind, it was southwest wind every day. We would wake up, see that the wind was calm in the morning, get in the hot tub, go to the shops, walk on the beach, go to the lighthouse, or read books. Then the wind would pick up after lunch and we would sail until dark every day. It was great sailing right from our house, leaving our sails rigged all week. Around Tuesday, I realized this was just like the movie, GroundHog Day. I felt like Bill Murray. It was like this Sunday through the following Friday. After we left on the following Saturday, David scored 20mph + winds all afternoon since his house was a Sunday to Sunday rental.

When we drove down on that first Saturday, we got mixed forecasts of E and NE wind…thus concerns about where to sail since our house launch in Avon was not well situated for East wind and Northeast wind makes the water pretty shallow at that spot. We got there around 2pm and decided to stay at our house to sail. We rigged immediately, started out on our 8.0s since it was NE 15mph, then the wind picked up to NE 20 and we sailed on our 6.5s. Jeff Clark arrived and we sailed 4 hours until sunset. Dinner that evening at The Pickled Steamer was very good. Other restaurants that week that were good were Topper’s Pizza, Diamond Shoals restaurant for breakfast, and Top Dog for burgers. Sadly, I found that my old favorite, Mad Crabber, has new ownership and was being renovated. It wasn’t open yet, but the new name is Mac Daddy’s Crab Shack….how ironic.

After that first day, it was Ground Hog Day every day…..warm southwest wind every afternoon, ranging between 12 – 25 mph. We sailed until after sunset most nights. We came off the water so late one night, got in a hot tub session and beer, then found no one open for dinner after 9pm, except a take-out Chinese place (Chinatown restaurant). Late-night poker was also the call. Life was good.

Following is a pictorial of our adventure…..Enjoy!
