A lot of club business has
happened in the last couple of months. Jeff Shanklin, your club President,
summarizes them all in his President’s Corner update in the next couple of
pages. Here’s a brief update on some other items:
1)
The Annual Club Christmas Party will be Friday, December 14th
at Charlie Prewett’s house in Greensboro.
If you haven't attended one of these parties, you are missing out as
they are a lot of fun. Bring some sort of covered dish/dessert, and also
remember to bring a gag gift for the always hilarious gift exchange. Let
Charlie know if you’re coming and what dish you’re bringing. Charlie’s phone
number is 282-9729 and his address is 3221 "C" Regents Park Lane in Greensboro. See
directions to Charlie’s house later in this newsletter on page 7.
2)
We have updated the member list and you should have received it with
this newsletter edition. Some folks have had email address changes and may have
missed some past editions of this year’s newsletter. Please email me at mbarnhardt@triad.rr.com and let me
know if you didn’t get any or some newsletters this past year and I’ll resend
them to you.
3)
I need material for the next
newsletter edition by January 15. Don’t forget: trip reports, stories,
pictures, whatever. Remember: this newsletter is only as good as the
participation the club puts into it. Thanks to Rob Pohlmann and Rob Cornwell
for the great pics.
4) You may have noticed by
the other web site address on the cover and as you’ll see in The President’s
Corner, we’re changing the name of the club. Send me your ideas for a new
newsletter title/name before January 15.
5) Next Spring’s Windfest
is being held April 18-20 at Frisco Woods Campground. Go ahead and call the
Campground to reserve your camping spot or cabin. Every year, several members
go and it’s always a great time. Board & Sail Makers will be there to let
you demo all the latest gear. It’s a great opportunity to try out some new
equipment and hang out with other windsurfers from around the country. Frisco
Woods Campground’s phone number is (252) 995-5208 and their web site is http://www.outer-banks.com/friscowoods/

New
Member Profile – John Calvin
John Calvin is our newest member. He works as a Project Manager and Engineer for BEERS Skanska, a National General Contractor. He’s from Miami, Florida, and left South Florida at age 16. He has done a lot of moving around due to his career. He is an NC State graduate and that has kept him in the NC and SC area since. Due to his travels with work, he and his wife have lived in Boone, NC; Nags Head, NC and now Winston Salem. He started sailing three years ago due to his career moving him "inland" and he still needed the surf feeling. He has been wave surfing a long time and took up windsurfing to fill in the inland voids on weekdays or windy surf days on the beach. He tries to make it to Nags Head, Rodanthe, Avon, Frisco, Hatteras pending the waves and wind conditions every weekend the Outer Banks is doing its thing, with day trips to Carolina Beach not out of the question on marginal weekends. He has an apartment in South Nags Head that is currently rented out, but will become available soon for use. He currently stays in his camping hut with bunks when the apartment is rented. He finally got to sail at Belews Lake recently and met up with some other members. He wants it known that he would like to partake in road trips with members every other weekend to the Outer Banks. Please welcome John to the club.
I can’t believe that another year is winding down. Some of you are putting your boards away for the winter while other members are breaking in their wetsuits and hoping that they still fit after another season. We had another eventful year with organizing two Learn to Sail clinics, a Fun/Open Sail Day, a Clean Up Day, an Emerald Isle trip, a social at Hermann and Lorna Heyge’s and numerous impromptu trips to the Outer Banks, Emerald Isle, and Fort Fisher.
I want to personally thank everyone on the board as well as everyone else who helped put all of these events together throughout the year. I always have great memories from the club trips and events and I truly look forward to every one of them.
To recap the year through some of our member news:
Jan & Pam announced their wedding plans and moved to Minnesota. Many of our members made the trip to attend their wedding on a beautiful Island in Wisconsin.
After last year’s escapade of driving through a gale and watching the top of their camper get ripped off, the Wrenns thought they were going to get through a single year unscathed until they watched their truck burn to the ground on their way to the Outer Banks.
Keny continued to annoy the heck out of the rest of the members by traveling to exotic destinations every other week.
Mac spent half of his year training for a triathlon to raise money for cancer of which he proudly finished. Way to go Mac!
Todd Morris was responsible for getting me back into playing music, and now I’m not sure why I ever quit playing. Thanks Todd.
We had new members come aboard in Jonathan Julian, David Lee, Fred McFalls, Gary Whitaker, and Jason Wohlgemuth (I hope I didn’t miss anyone). Glad to have you guys. As for recent activity with the board, you’ve probably read a lot of the emails floating around but here is a recap of some of the current news.
Name Change – Recently in our general meeting on Nov. 12th, we had a near unanimous vote to change the name of our club from BCCW to Triad Windsurfing Club. We will also begin to develop a new dedicated web site, which will be much easier to remember and access than the old one, which had to be accessed through www.thedepot.com. We will continue to use the old site indefinitely and eventually it will forward everyone to our newly constructed site. The new web site name will be www.triadwindsurfing.com and you can already access our current site through this new web address.
Christmas Party – Charlie, and Kelly Pruett
have graciously offered to host this year's Christmas party. It will be
held on Friday, December 14th from 7pm until approx. 10pm. If you have
not attended one of these parties, you are missing something, as they are a lot
of fun. Bring some sort of covered dish/dessert, and also remember
to bring a gag gift for the gift exchange.
Nominations for New Officers - We will be voting on new officers at the Christmas party. Please forward (jashankl@tycoelectronics.com) any nominations to me before the party on Dec. 14th. We always welcome and need new blood on the board, so if you would like to be more involved in the club, please don't hesitate to nominate yourself. Also if you don't necessarily want to be an officer but you would like to help out on a committee, please let me know. We can always use the help. The offices that we will be taking nominations for are as follows:
-
President
-
Vice President
-
Secretary/Treasurer
-
Newsletter
-
Publicity
-
Social
Trailer Clean Up/ Reorganization - A
committee has been formed which will be working to make the trailer less
cluttered and more user friendly for all members especially the beginners in
the club. You will soon be hearing more about this effort through emails
and phone calls. Charlie Pruett, Don Wrenn, Rob Cornwell and I will be
working on this effort.
In an attempt to
improve BCCW Triad Windsurfing Club, we have brainstormed on areas that
we feel would be beneficial to the majority of our members as well as what will
help our club to remain strong in the future.
If you have any ideas that you would like to share, please don’t
hesitate to share them with any of your board members.
I would like to thank everyone for helping me to serve the club this year. I will remain involved in the club in some capacity and I hope you will too. If you haven’t been as involved in the club, as you would like, that’s what New Year’s resolutions are for. We truly have a great group of people in this club and I hope you will take advantage of it and get as much out of it as I have.
Happy Holidays and I hope to see you on the water.

to windsurfing sites in the Cape Lookout area. It was written by Roger and
Kathy Nightingale of the Triangle Boardsailing Club. This guide has information
on sites in and around Emerald Isle, Morehead City, Beaufort, Core Banks,
Shackleford Banks, and Bogue Banks. There are links to maps, tide charts,
coastal surveys, and nautical maps.
